Sadie's Summer Room

First Day of summer is June 21, 2009

Hello! Welcome! Summer is here! Well, in this room atleast.
Beaches, cookout, picnics, sun!! Summer is the time of
year we do more outside than any other time of the year.
Why wouldn't we? Everything seems to be in full bloom.
We can count on good sunshine weather. We get the feeling
of fun and freedom. Yes! I like summer! And here in my
summer room I will bring summer to you year round.
So, grab a hamburger off the grill and a soda and relax!
I'm glad you're here.

"It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
you made both summer and winter."
~Psalm 74:17~

Summertime

"As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat, summer and winter,
day and night will never cease."
~Genesis 8:22~

Summer is the warmest season of the year. The Northern Hemisphere,
the northern half of the earth, has summer weather during late June, July,
August, and early September. Summerlike days sometimes occur in mid-autumn
(see Indian summer).

In summer, warm southern winds carry moisture north from the
Gulf of Mexico to central and eastern North America. They can bring warm,
humid weather to much of the region east of the Rocky Mountains and
as far north as Canada. Thunderstorms often develop in and along the
northern boundary of this warm, moist air. The highest summer temperatures
usually occur in the middle of the continent.

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer begins on June 20, 21, or 22, when
the North Pole has its greatest slant toward the sun. The moment at which
the pole has this slant is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
On the first day of summer, the sun is high in the sky. That day, or a day
shortly before or after it, is the longest day of the year—that is, the day
with the most time between sunrise and sunset.

Summer Solstice

One solstice occurs on June 20, 21, or 22, when the sun reaches its
most northerly point, directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer (23 degrees
27 minutes north latitude). In the Northern Hemisphere, the June solstice
is known as the summer solstice. The day of the summer solstice in the
Northern Hemisphere marks the beginning of summer. The summer solstice
occurs on or near the longest day of the year.

Indian Summer

Indian summer is a short period of especially fair weather and mild days.
It comes in late October or early November while the leaves are turning
color and falling from the trees. Indian summer has no definite dates
to begin or end.

The mild, pleasant weather of Indian summer follows the autumn's first
period of cold, wintry days. The days become noticeably warmer, but
the nights remain chilly. The sun shines dimly and softly. The sky
turns a rich blue and appears gentle and hazy near the horizon.
The air remains smoky and still, with almost no wind. An Indian summer
moon often has a soft yellow or orange hue. Indian summer lasts from a
week to 10 days, and sometimes for two weeks. Then winter begins.

Indian summer is caused by a large mass of warm tropical air. South
winds carry these warm air masses northward over the country. During
Indian summer, the air mass remains stagnant (still). This causes the
weather to remain clear and mild. The American Indians enjoyed Indian
summer and looked forward to it every year. They called it the special
gift of a favorite god, Cautantowwit, the god of the Southwest.

The origin of the name Indian summer is uncertain. One story says
that the American settlers named the period after the American Indians,
who told the settlers that this period would come. The settlers also
believed that the smokiness of Indian summer came from fires that the
Indians built on the prairies.

When you think of summer, what comes to mind? For me....
the bright sun!!! I live in a place where the sun is bold
and HOT!! The temperatures here can reach above
100 degrees on some days. Whew! I need a glass of ice,
cold water just talking about it. How much do you know
about the biggest star.....the sun?

And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to
separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to
mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse
of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. God made two
great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to
govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse
of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night,
and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
~Genesis 1:14-18~

 The Biggest Star: The Sun

Sun is a huge, glowing ball at the center of our solar system. The sun
provides light, heat, and other energy to Earth. The sun is made up
entirely of gas. Most of it is a type of gas that is sensitive to magnetism.
This sensitivity makes this type of gas so special that scientists sometimes
give it a special name: plasma. Nine planets and their moons, tens of
thousands of asteroids, and trillions of comets revolve around the sun. The
sun and all these objects are in the solar system. Earth travels around the
sun at an average distance of about 92,960,000 miles
(149,600,000 kilometers) from it.

The sun is one of over 100 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.
It is about 25,000 light-years from the center of the galaxy, and
it revolves around the galactic center once about every 250 million years.
One light-year, the distance that light travels in a vacuum in a year,
equals about 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers).

The part of the sun that we see has a temperature of about
5500 °C (10,000 °F). Astronomers measure star temperatures in a
metric unit called the kelvin (abbreviated K). One kelvin equals exactly
1 Celsius degree (1.8 Fahrenheit degree), but the Kelvin and Celsius
scales begin at different points. The Kelvin scale starts at absolute zero,
which is –273.15 °C (– 459.67 °F). Thus, the temperature of the solar
surface is about 5800 K. Temperatures in the sun's core reach
over 15 million K.

Sun - (Heb. shemesh), first mentioned along with the moon as
the two great luminaries of heaven (Gen. 1:14-18). By their motions
and influence they were intended to mark and divide times and seasons.
The worship of the sun was one of the oldest forms of false
religion (Job 31:26,27), and was common among the Egyptians and Chaldeans
and other pagan nations. The Jews were warned against this form of
idolatry (Deut. 4:19; 17:3; comp. 2 Kings 23:11; Jer. 19:13)

Sadie's Thoughts...
I have never been real good at science in any form. But as
an adult, I have come to learn and understand more than I
ever did in school. The information I share out of the World
Book Encyclopedia, I sift through...especially, when it comes
to things concerning science, like the sun I just wrote about.
So, with that said, I decided this would be a good time to
share with you a site I found. I believe it will help you (and me)
understand this world we live in a little better in light of
God's Word. I encourage you to check it out.

Then let us, one and all, be contented with our lot;
The June is here this morning, and the sun is shining hot;
Oh! let us fill our hearts up with the glory of the day,
And banish ev'ry doubt and care and sorrow far away.

Verses on Contentment & Leaving Our Worries with God:

For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
~Philippians 4:11~

But godliness with contement is great gain.
~1 Timothy 6:6~

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.
~Psalm 55:22~

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by
prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests
to God.
~Philippians 4:6~

Are you content with your lot in life? Do you know what it
means to be content? Maybe you are worried about things.
Do you know how to find peace and contentment?
Let me share the KEY. Jesus it the WAY.

Journaling

Do you keep a journal? I do! I have kept a journal since I was
12 years old. I write ANYTHING that I want in my journal.
My thoughts about life experiences, prayers, dreams, and things
I don't ever want to forget. My journaling has been instrumental
in getting me through hard, difficult times as well as serving as
a place to hold precious memories. I am older these days but I
still write in my journal. I also keep a seperate prayer journal.
If you don't journal, let me encourage you to. I consider my journaling
conversations with God. You don't need a fancy notebook. And
old notebook will do. Write the date at the top and start writing.
Just write whatever is on your heart. Maybe something good unexpected
happen today or maybe a poem is in your head or scripture verse
on your heart. Just write, write, write! What better time of the
year to begin a journal??

A Prayer Journal

What is a prayer journal? A prayer journal is where you keep
a log of your prayers. You write your prayers down and check
them periodically. A prayer journal is a fabulous way to see
how God is moving in your life and in the life of others. It's
also a great way to keep you in HIS! will. I highly recommend
you get yourself a notebook and daily write down your prayers.
You will just be delighted to know that God is working in your
life as you pray for yourself and for others.

Summer Picnics

Summer is known for its picnics. I love a good picnic! Homemade
food, cool drinks, and family fun. Oh! And it is so cool if you
can get your hands on a pretty good sized picnic basket to complete
your trip. I am going to give you a basic list of what to bring
in your basket and anything else to make your afternoon delightful.

Basic Picnic Basket Items

--A checkered picnic blanket or
any good sized blanket to relax on.
**Make sure it is washable.**

--Napkins and plastic utensils.
**Should be disposable.**

--Plastic cups if not bringing can or
boxed drinks.

--Condiments as needed.
Ice included if needed.

--Homemade sandwiches or other main dish.

--Chips or sides as you desire.
Fresh veggies for dipping included.

--Assortment of sweets, as you choose.
Can be fruits, cookies, popsicles, etc.
**Bringing popsicles or ice cream?
Remember to pack seperately in a cooler
that will keep them frozen until ready to
eat.**

This is just a basic starter list but you should pack
your picnic basket however you desire. Just keep in
mind where you are going, how long you plan to be
there, and who is going with you. And have fun!

For Fun

Bring a frisbee, volleyball equipment,
baseball bat & ball, football, books to
read to younger children or Bible, board games,
kites (weather permitting), homemade airplanes,
craft activity simple enough to do at a park,
magnifying glass to look at bugs, bird watching
gear, and a list of outdoor games like Duck, Duck,
Goose or Hide and Seek. Whatever your family
enjoys doing together will do.

Upon the Shore

Upon the shore, I walked with Him at even
And I looked back upon the path we'd trod
And in the sand I traced our way at even
And I was glad I'd walked through life with God:
For side by side we'd journeyed through together
All through the world's wide wilderness of care
And side by side we'd journeyed through to even
Safe at his side the Lord my God had brought me here.

But in my joy I caught a strain of sadness
To give me pause when thinking of my way
For on the shore I saw he'd left me lonely
When I had most the need of him to stay:
When I was tried he'd left me worn and wandering,
He'd left me lone when I was fighting fears
He'd let me tread the steepest slopes in solitude
Before he came back to my side to dry my tears.

But then the Lord drew near to me in comfort
And in his tenderness he made it plain
That in the times when dread and darkness threatened
He was my shield and shelter from the pain:
For on his shoulders he was gently bearing
And on his shoulders I from harm was free:
The single trace of footprints of the Master,
The single trace of footprints shows he carried me.

So on the shore I walk with Him at even
I face the latter days of life secure,
For if my pilgrimage reserves me sorrow
The footprints show that He is strong and sure:
If I am near the gates of heaven weary,
No longer strong enough to stride alone
The footprints show that he is there to carry me:
The footprints show the Lord my God will bear me home.
