"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."
Mark 16:15

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17, 2007

May the grace of God’s protection
And His great love abide
Within your home and
within the hearts
Of all who dwell inside.

Who is St. Patrick ?

It's been said that St. Patrick chased the snakes out of
Ireland and plucked a shamrock to teach the Trinity but
that is folklore. The snake tale could be a metaphor for the
conversion of pagans. The shamrock is also possibly a tale which
instituted the wearing of shamrocks on his feast day in
remembrance of him. However, St. Patrick does deserve to be
recognized. He taught us by example that all life is, indeed,
precious and worth sharing God with.

St. Patrick was convinced that he had been handpicked by God
to convert the entire country of Ireland to Christianity. In the
process of saving the people of Ireland, who he referred to as
"barabrians", he underwent a conversion as well. In the years that
followed he shared God with the Irelanders and grew to have a
better understanding of God through them. As he worked on their
hearts, God continued to work on his. He would be a witness for
Christ among the people.

As a child Patrick was not religious. As a teen, he was kidnapped
in a raid and taken to Ireland where he is slaved as a shepherd
until he escaped. He returned home and began studies for the
priesthood with the desire to return to Ireland as a missionary.
Evetually, he would become known as the bishop of Ireland.

He is known as a humble and strong man with the determination
to share the gospel. He would be facing some serious walls
because the gospel had not been taken beyond the boundaries
of Roman civilization. But he knows without a doubt that this
is what he is to do. In this certainty, Patrick finds his strength
to overcome every obstacle he would encounter. He would be obedient
to follow the call he believed came straight from God.

Patrick had a heart for the lost. Through experience he could
relate to the excluded and downtrodden. He knew what it was
to be a person no one wanted anything to do with. And with this
knowledge, Patrick was better able to reach out to those who
needed a loving God in their life. He fulfilled Christ's primary
objective for the apostles that was "to go and preach the gospel to the
ends of the earth" (Mark 16:15).

St. Patrick Reference
St. Patrick #1

St. Patrick wrote an autobiographical confession that offers
a unique record of life in the British Isles during that time.
It was originally written in Latin but I found it translated
in English. This is a chance to enjoy this incredible writing
by St. Patrick himself.

My thoughts on St. Patrick

St. Patrick is a great example of obedience to God and showed the
importance of spreading the gospel. He desired to reach all of
Ireland with the Word of God. So should we have hearts to reach
others with the salvation message. With so much destruction and suffering
in our world, why wouldn't we want to tell someone about the
Light of the world? And as children of God, we are commanded to share
with others the Gift of grace given by our loving Father. I want to
encourage you to do just that. Pray for God's direction concerning this.

"Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel".
1 Corinthians 9:16

St. Patrick's Day Fun

St. Patrick's Day is a neat holiday to celebrate. Being that I'm
a homeschooling mom, I like to do fun things to recognize this day.
Along with reminding my children about what Patrick did, we learn
about Ireland, fix a fun meal (with green mashed potatoes), and do
crafts. Hang out and see what I find. And remember...wear
green if you don't want to be pinched.

I bind myself today
The power of God to hold and lead
His eye to watch, His might to stay
His ear to harken to my need
The wisdom of my God to teach
His hand to guide
His shield to ward
The word of God to give me speech
His Heavenly Host to be my guard.
