Christmas Memories and Traditions

A
Wrapping Station
Since gift giving is a major part of the holiday and kids love to
help, why not set up a wrapping station on your kitchen table or
counter or wherever. Have available paper, scissors, tape,
ribbons, and labels from which the children can choose.
The
Christmas truth
Pick the same time every year to sit and read the Christmas
truth to your family. Christmas Eve or Christmas morning would
be excellent times. Whatever works for you!
Choose
It Myself
Take each child shopping individually for gifts for their siblings
and for your spouse. Doesn't have to be costly but gives them the
joy of getting something for someone else.
A
Caring Christmas
With the children, search closets and chests for coats, clothing,
toys, and canned goods to give to the homeless and needy.
Gingerbread
House
Build and decorate it together. An impressive and splendid
effort that's worth the time in the memory department.
Town
Tour
Ride or walk around the neighborhood one evening to see the
Christmas lights. (This is a favorite for us!)
On
Display
Select a bowl or basket, the mantel or door frame for showing
the Christmas cards you receive. Use the same "holder" every
year so it becomes part of your Christmas tradition.
Extra
Kisses
Hang mistletoe in heavily trafficked areas of the house; over the
refrigerator door, the back door, the bathroom, or your child's
bedroom door.
New
Additions
Give your children new ornaments each Christmas. The special
part of this tradition is that when your children are ready to go
out on their own, they will have these special ornaments to take
with them to keep home close to them.
(This one we do faithfully.)
Caroling at Home
You don't have to go caroling with your church or family to
sing all of your favorite Christmas songs. Do it right at home!
Pick a night or two and just devote it to singing everyone's
favorite Christmas songs.
Who
filled it?
This is a neat idea if you do stockings at your home. Have family
members draw a name out of a hat to see whose stocking they
will fill. Keep names a secret until Christmas morning. You can
set a monetary limit if you choose. This one is like being a
secret elf.
A
Good Book
Make a good book a tradition at your house on Christmas Eve or
Christmas morning. Something Christmas related or better yet the
Christmas Story right out of the bible. Snuggle up under a quilt
and start reading!
(I will try to have a list soon to get you started.)
Gift
Opening
If it is your family's tradition to open gifts on Christmas morning,
have each person open one gift Christmas Eve. And if it is your
family's tradition to open gifts on Christmas Eve, then save one
gift for Christmas morning. (We have always done the tradition
of opening one gift Christmas Eve and we always make it the
smallest one. Kids love this!)
Jesus'
Cake
How about making a birthday cake for Jesus? Afterall, it is His
birthday you are celebrating. Any kind of cake will do! Make it
on Christmas Eve and enjoy it then and on Christmas Day. Don't
forget to sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus.
Scripture
Advent Chain
This year make one of those homemade chains. You know the kind
where you take 1" wide x 6" long strips of green and red
construction paper and linked them together, alternating the
colors. Before you link them, write a scripture pertaining to
Christmas or to Jesus' gift to us on each one. Each day during
advent season open one and pray it together. You can hang this
anywhere you will remember to do it.
