Sadie's Father's Day Room

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead,
bring them up in the training and instruction
of the Lord.
~Ephesians 6:4~

Father's day will be celebrated on June 17, 2007.

Dedicated to my father, Herman Ray.

I miss you Dad.

How Did Father's Day Come To Be?

Father's Day is a day on which the people of many countries
express gratitude and appreciation for their fathers by giving them gifts
or greeting cards. In the United States and Canada, Father's Day
falls on the third Sunday in June.

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Wash., got the idea to set aside
a special day to honor fathers in 1909, after listening to a sermon on
Mother's Day. She wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart.
Smart's wife died in 1898, and he raised their six children on his own.
Dodd drew up a petition recommending adoption of a national father's day.
The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's
Christian Association (YMCA) supported it. Through Sonora Dodd's efforts,
Spokane celebrated the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Over
the years, many resolutions to make the day an official national holiday
were introduced. Finally, in 1972, President Richard M. Nixon signed
Father's Day into law.

What Is A Father?

The position and authority of the father as the head of the family
are expressly assumed and sanctioned in Scripture, as a likeness of
that of the Almighty over his creatures. It lies of course at the
root of that so-called patriarchal government, (Genesis 3:16;
1 Corinthians 11:3) which was introductory to the more definite
systems which followed, and which in part, but not wholly, s
uperseded it. The father’s blessing was regarded as conferring special
benefit, but his malediction special injury, on those on whom it fell,
(Genesis 9:25,27; 27:27-40; 48:15,20; 49:1) ... and so also the
sin of a parent was held to affect, in certain cases, the welfare of
his descendants. (2 Kings 5:27) The command to honor parents is
noticed by St. Paul as the only one of the Decalogue which bore a
distinct promise, (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:2) and disrespect
towards them was condemned by the law as one of the worst crimes.
(Exodus 21:15,17; 1 Timothy 1:9) It is to this well-recognized
theory of parental authority and supremacy that the very various
uses of the term "father" in Scripture are due. "Fathers" is used in
the sense of seniors, (Acts 7:2; 22:1) and of parents in general, or
ancestors. (Daniel 5:2; Jeremiah 27:7; Matthew 23:30,32)
(Taken from Smith's Bible Dictionary)

Father...a name applied (1) to any ancestor (Deuteronomy 1:11;
1 Kings 15:11; Matthew 3:9; 23:30, etc.); and (2) as a title of
respect to a chief, ruler, or elder, etc. (Judges 17:10; 18:19;
1 Samuel 10:12; 2Kings 2:12; Matthew 23:9, etc.). (3) The author
or beginner of anything is also so called; e.g., Jabal and Jubal
(Genesis 4:20,21; Compare Job 38:28).

Applied to God (Exodus 4:22; Deuteronomy 32:6; 2Sam 7:14;
Psalms 89:27,28, etc.).

As denoting his covenant relation to the Jews (Jeremiah 31:9;
Isaiah 63:16; 64:8; John 8:41, etc.).

Believers are called God's "sons" (John 1:12; Romans 8:16;
Matthew 6:4,8,15,18; 10:20,29). They also call him "Father"
(Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:3; 2 Cor. 1:2; Galatians 1:4)

Sadie's Thoughts on Her Father

Okay! I am not a father. But I had a father. I loved him
and have God to thank for that. The Lord taught me how to sit
at His feet and learn to love a man, my earthly father, who would
teach me more about the love of God than anyone else in my life.
Though my father was not who I would have chosen for me,
he was the one chosen by God for me. My childhood was rough more
often than not and my father was usually the reason. So, how
did I learn about the love of God from him? By learning that
God has a purpose for my life and it included my father. No matter
how tough and sad things got, I learned that God still loved
my dad and I needed to love him as well. God even showed me
how to forgive him for my sake and God has blessed that forgiveness
more than I could have imagined. My father also taught me that
God is a forgiving God...even forgiving him. My father has shown
God's strength through his ability to overcome tragedies and
an addiction with no other help but the help of our precious Lord.
It has been a long journey growing up with my father but
better than that, it has been a rewarding journey learning
from my Heavenly Father!

I found the following in the Men's Devotional.

Help me to understand that only a few things are
really necessary in life. And when you get right
down to it, only one: to sit at your feet...
listening...looking into your eyes...and loving you.
Thank you for the priviledge of sitting at those
anil-scarred feet. Grant me the grace never
to regard that priviledge casually, nor to come
there often...because you are worthy to be adored,
O beautiful Savior...because you are worthy
to be adored.

Make Your Dad Feel Special!

Do you know what you are going to do for your dad? Have
you decided what would make him feel special? Well, I
wanted to offer you some ideas. Here we go!

              1. How about his favorite dinner made by YOU?
              2. Make him a homemade card or write him a poem.
              3. Get him a bible if he doesn't have one.
              4. How about tickets to a sports game he would love to see?
              5. Mow the lawn or take out the trash without being asked.
                 These are usually daddy chores.
              6. Rent his favorite movie, pop some popcorn, and watch it
                 together.
              7. Draw a picture of you & him together. Frame it if you
                 can.
              8. If he likes to fish, take him fishing.
              9. Does he have a favorite restaurant? Take him there.
             10. Shine his shoes or iron his shirts for the next week of
work. Daddies like to be pampered, too.
             11. Take him to the movies! Then for ice cream!
             12. If your dad is in the hospital or in a nursing home, plan
to visit for an afternoon. Your company is a great gift! Be
sure to ask lots of questions about him and his childhood.
             13. Fill up the gas tank in his car at no cost to him. Nothing
says I love you like a full gas tank. :o)
             14. Send him encouraging notes all week leading up to Father's
                 Day.
             15. Remind him you love him! Tell him thank you for all he
does. Give him a great big hug!
             16. How about a massage? A day at the spa? Dads work hard.
             17. Wash his car and dry it! Make it shiny!

Happy Father's Day Dad!
We Love You!

WHAT MAKES A DAD

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
